GIF, JPEG, or Flash SWF format. Flash is supported for IE only and for animation/movie presentation only (no mouse or click events within banner). Should contain some call to action that indicates "Roll your mouse over this ad to see more". Maximum file sizes as follows:
Large-sized Units

  • 27K for Flash
Medium-sized Units
  • 15K for GIF/JPEG
  • 20K for Flash
Small-sized Units

Panels:
Number of &
Code Size
Each panel may not be larger than 2K in html code and the maximum size of HTML Code for all panels is 8K. If you have only:
1 panel - it may not exceed 8K
2 panels - they may not exceed 4K for each panel
3 panels - they may not exceed 2.67K for each panel
4 panels - they may not exceed 2K for each panel
Any ad unit that contains an auto-display, the auto-display is counted as 1 panel.
Initial
Load Size
The initial load sized is comprised of 3 components:
 • Main Creative
 • Code Size of all Panels
 • Proprietary Technology
The following limits designate the maximum initial load size:
 • Large-sized Units: 32K
 • Medium-sized Units: 25K
 • Small-sized Units: 18K
When calculating initial load times, 5K of proprietary technology must be taken into account.  For example, if you're building a Large Rectangle and the main creative is 20K, then you can only have 7K worth of panel code.  If there is 8K of panel code, then your main creative must not be larger than 19K.
Mouse-Over
Hot-Spot Sizes
This is the hot-spot area on a banner that causes a panel to display.
Large-sized Units
Each hot-spot may have up to a maximum of 4000 pixels (height x width of hot-spot). Total maximum area of banner attributed to mouse-over tabs cannot exceed one-third (33%) of the total pixels.
Medium-sized Units
Each hot-spot may have up to a maximum of 2500 pixels (height x width of hot-spot). Total maximum area of banner attributed to mouse-over tabs cannot exceed one-third (33%) of the total pixels.
Small-sized Units
Each hot-spot may have up to a maximum of 1700 pixels (height x width of hot-spot). Total maximum area of banner attributed to mouse-over tabs cannot exceed one-half (50%) of the total pixels.
For horizontal banners, the hot-spots cannot span the entire width of the banner; and for skyscrapers, the hot-spots cannot span the entire height of the banner.

Panels:
Contents
HTML-based content, allowing almost any content that can go on a normal web page, along these guidelines:
•  Limit use of verbose HTML, include only code required to display panel contents
•  No header tags (neither start or end tags), including the following: <html>, <!doctype>, <head>, <title>, <base>, <isindex>, <link>, <style>, <script>, <meta>, <body>
•  Cannot include style sheets or style tags; however, inline style attributes can (and should) be used
•  Cannot include script tags due to various nuances of script within the panels; however many commonly "scripted" items, such as form validation and some mouse-overs can be added by PointRoll support staff, just ask your PointRoll sales representative for those features to be added
•  May include references to external files such as: images, audio, Flash (IE only), & applets (IE only, use of JVM can limit placements)
   • Optimize or compress images as much as possible
   • Divide large images into multiple, smaller images
   • Individual image files should be 8K or less in file size
   • Total graphics file size should target a maximum of 20K per panel
   • HTML roll-over image swaps should be 5K or less in file size
   • Flash file size should be 50K or less and use streaming content
•  If Flash or applets are included, alternate panels or alternate content using images and text should be provided for use in Netscape
•  All links will launch a new browser
•  Goal of panel display is instaneous experience, so use text & background colors as much as possible to increase the amount of immediately visable content
•  Must be valid HTML for all target browsers
•  Width and Height attributes are required on all elements that support them, especially images, since this improves the rendering performance of the panels
•  Avoid lengthy drop-down lists due to code size limits
Tracking
PointRoll must be able to track all clicks & activities within the banner and panels.  For HTML links, this is taken care of automatically for you.  For Flash clicks and activities, please see the PointRoll Flash Specs
Audio/Video
May only be in the panel and may play automatically when the panel is expanded.  Stop/Mute and Start buttons are required.  Audio may not loop and may not exceed 30 seconds.
